Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas, which has no smell, colour or taste. It comes from the radioactive decay of radium, which is present in small amounts in rocks and soil. Radon is chemically inert, so it can easily escape from the ground into the air where it can be inhaled.

Modeling Radon in a Closed Structure Since the quantity of radon-222 in potable water supplies ranges over several orders of magnitude, a generalized model will be pre- sented with several examples of how certain variables affect the amount of radon in a closed structure and the resulting daughter distribution. Figure 2.4 Principle decay properties of radon-222 and short-lived decay products – ‎(Source NRPB_1993) As shown in Figure 2.4 the beta and gamma radiation’s may be ignored, since their contribution to both lung dose equivalent and effective dose equivalent are small compared to those from alpha radiation (ICRP,1987). Se hela listan på epa.gov Radon can enter homes through cracks in floors, walls, or foundations, and collect indoors. It can also be released from building materials, or from water obtained from wells that contain radon.

These produce an inhalable radioactive mixture Water samples collected from different sources were analysed for radon concentrations in order to evaluate the health effect associated with radon in water. The radon concentrations were in the range of 3.56-98.57, 0.88-25.49, 0.73-1.35 and 0.24-1.03 Bq.L-1 for borehole, well, packaged and utility water, respectively. The Radon-222 gas penetrates through soil and rocks and dissolves in water (Xinwei, 2006). Normally, drinking water from ground water sources has higher concentration of radon than surface water.
